Recently, we completed the cutting of a batch of 904L steel parts.
What's 904L Steel?
904L is a type of austenitic stainless steel that is commonly used in high-corrosion applications, such as chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage industries. It is known for its high resistance to corrosion and is particularly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.
This stainless steel grade is made up of a composition of low carbon, high nickel and molybdenum, with additions of copper and nitrogen, which provides excellent resistance to corrosive media, making it a popular choice for applications that require long-term durability and reliability.
904L is also referred to as UNS N08904 and is a non-magnetic and non-heat treatable material, which makes it easy to fabricate and weld. It also has a low thermal expansion and high resistance to stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for use in a variety of high-stress applications.
Application of 904L Steel
904L steel is commonly used in a range of industries and applications where high levels of corrosion resistance are required. Some of the key applications of 904L include:
Chemical Processing: 904L is often used in chemical processing equipment and piping systems due to its high resistance to corrosive chemicals, such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and nitric acid.
Pharmaceutical Industry: This stainless steel grade is frequently used in the pharmaceutical industry for its ability to withstand exposure to aggressive cleaning and sterilization agents, making it ideal for use in pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment and pipelines.
Food and Beverage Industry: 904L is a popular choice for food and beverage processing equipment, as it is non-toxic, does not interact with food, and is easy to clean and sanitize.
Marine Engineering: This material is highly resistant to saltwater corrosion, making it an ideal choice for marine engineering applications, such as propellers, pumps, and ship components.
Oil and Gas Industry: 904L is used in the oil and gas industry for its high resistance to sour gases and corrosive environments, making it ideal for use in pipelines, pumps, valves, and other equipment in this industry.
Nuclear Power Plants: This stainless steel grade is also used in nuclear power plants for its high resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for use in high-stress and high-temperature applications in this industry.
These are just a few examples of the many applications of 904L Steel. Its high resistance to corrosion and its non-magnetic and non-heat treatable properties make it a versatile material that is well-suited for use in a wide range of high-stress and high-corrosion environments.
What We Do
As a leading metal fabricator, we can use various metal materials as well as 904L steel to produce a wide range of metal products and components for various industries and applications. Some of our common metal fabrication processes used with 904L steel include:
Cutting: Providing cutting services, including sawing, plasma cutting, laser cutting, flame cutting, and water jet cutting to create custom metal components.
Welding: Providing welding services, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding, to join metal components together.
Machining: Providing machining services, including drilling, CNC turning, CNC milling, and grinding to remove metal to create a desired shape or finish. The machining methods are depending on the size and complexity of the part being machined.
Finishing: Offering surface finishing services, such as painting, powder coating, and plating, to protect the metal and enhance its appearance.
Assembly: Providing assembly services, including welding, bolting, and other joining methods, to create the final product.
These are some of the common metal fabrication processes used. The specific fabrication techniques used will depend on the size, shape, and complexity of the parts being fabricated and the requirements of the end-use application.
